Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program

The City of Toronto offers a subsidy / rebate program to homeowners in the city for work done to prevent basements from flooding – called the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program.  The subsidy coverage – up to $3400 – is offered to owners of single-family, duplex or triplex residential homes in Toronto, Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough.

When you hire the team at Gazda to install a backwater valve or sump pump in your basement, you can then apply for $3400 in rebates that are paid from the City of Toronto directly to you.  We have years of experience helping homeowners take advantage of this program and can assist you with the application process and paperwork to make sure you get your rebate.

Sewer Backwater Valve Services

In the GTA, if your neighbourhood experiences a sudden rainfall, many basements could be at risk for flooding. Having rainwater flow into the basement is one type of flooding, but far more damaging is dirty sewage water coming up from the drains into your home.

This type of sewage backup can be devastating for a homeowner and prevention is the best type of protection – which is why it’s important to install a backwater valve.

Backwater Valve Installation

A backwater valve (aka back flow valve or sewer backup valve) is a device that is installed on the sewer line that connects to your home. The valve only allows water and sewage to flow one way – away from your home!

Inside the backwater valve is a small flap that remains open during the normal flow of water and sewage, and automatically closes when water tries to flow in the opposite direction.

Backwater valve installation in an older home can be a big job – which is why it’s important to hire a licensed plumber. In this case we will usually cut a hole in the concrete floor near the floor drain. We will dig to the main sewer line, cut out a piece and replace it with the backwater valve.

Your new backwater valve will now protect your basement from sewage backup in the event of a major rainstorm that overwhelms the neighbourhood sewers.

And remember, all costs related to backwater valve installation are eligible for coverage under the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program offered by the City of Toronto.

Sump Pump Services

A sump pump is another device that is covered by the city’s subsidy program to prevent flooding. The subsidy program specifically covers installation or replacement of a sump pump. The program also covers installation of a sump pump alarm or backup power battery unit. These additions will further lower the risk of basement flooding happening in your home.

Sump Pump Installation

A sump pump is a device that removes water from the basement sump basin, which is a small hole dug into the basement floor to collect excess water. This water collects from different sources, but the main source is usually excess rain or snowmelt.

When the excess water in the sump basin reaches a certain level, the sump pump will activate and pump the water through a pipe, away from the home. The sump pump is an important device for any home with a basement – it is often your first line of protection against basement flooding. For this reason, it is important to ensure your sump pump is properly installed and maintained.

At Gazda we have many years experience installing and repairing sump pumps for homes and businesses. Our plumbers also have experience advising our clients on how to take advantage of city subsidies that help offset any costs.

Our team will also be happy to advise on sump pump backup power units and sump pump alarms. These are also covered by Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program and will help to further protect your home.
